If traveling was free, you’d never see me again. You’ve probably heard this quote many times, right? And you wish to rob a bank immediately to be able to go to Bali drink fresh coconuts and enjoy paradise beaches? Well, you don’t have to become a criminal or involve yourself in any illegal activity to travel the world.
It’s possible to travel with almost no money.
I also don’t have a lot of money or a rich parents who funded my travels. I didn’t inherit a fortune or won the lottery. I didn’t marry a rich sheik or rob a bank. So what’s my secret?
How can I afford to travel so much?
The prejudice is that travels are very expensive. You really don’t have to be rich to travel well. In other words, you do not have to be a businessman (I’m not!) and have a looot of money on your bank account (I don’t have!) to be able to travel.
Before I began to live a life of travel I’ve worked in an insurance company from 9 to 5. Working in finance enabled me to earn some money. That was not a fortune of course. It was enough to finance my first big adventure to SE Asia. I’ve visited 5 countries from Thailand to Indonesia in a few months. And I spent a lot of money as I didn’t know back then how to manage by daily budget and travel cheap.
Saving on everything
How I managed to save for my first big trip? The answer is very simple. PRIORITIES.
If you want to travel than saving money for traveling must be high on the list of your priorities. Otherwise, you’ll never have enough money to go anywhere. Before I left my job and booked a ticket to Bangkok I worked and saved a lot.
- I didn’t go out or ate in restaurants. Instead, I invited friends over for a dinner.
- I sold my car and started walking to work. That was also a good exercise every morning and I saved a lot of money as I didn’t have to pay car insurance, petrol, or car servicing anymore.
- I stopped buying coffee at work and cooked my own.
- I didn’t go shopping, I had a lot of clothes in my wardrobe anyway. I tried to recall when was the last time I bought the shoes. I don’t remember honestly (if by shoes you don’t count flip-flops for $ 2 from Thailand).
- I didn’t go to the cinema, I downloaded movies from the internet. As well as music and books.
So I’m trying to save a few bucks on coffees, lunches, shopping, cigarettes and similar ‘joys’ on which we spend a large part of our budget every day.
New ways of making money
If despite all this you don’t manage to save anything because you have a loan or a girl who must have new shoes, do not despair. There are ways how to travel even if you can’t save some money for it. You can devote your life to travel and like me, get paid to travel the world. Sounds amazing right?
Becoming a Tour Guide
When I came back from Asia I spent most of my savings. So I started to search a job related to travel.
I decided to finish a tour guide course and I’ve started to work as a freelance TOUR GUIDE for many tourist agencies in Croatia.
If you have good communication and organizational skills, you are passionate to learn new things, funny, positive, cheerful, love to meet all kinds of people… than you can considerate become a tour guide.
Of course it is not easy as any other job that involves working with people of all kinds, but I love it now. Salary is great, it allows me to earn money for my adventures and trips around the world, and it’s great to go ‘for free’ to Bali or Sri Lanka and at the same time earn money.
Other ‘travel jobs’
In addition to a tour guide job, there’s a whole range of activities that include travel.
- Cruise ship worker
- Flight attendant
- Teaching English or other languages (particularly in Asian countries)
- Seasonal workers on ski resorts
- Farm worker (especially popular in New Zealand)
- Dive instructor, work in hostels
- Volunteer in remote parts of the world…
There are really a plenty of choices as long you are not picky. If you want to travel any job related to travel is excellent.
Travel Blogger – why not?
You can earn money as a TRAVEL BLOGGER, although it’s not so easy. After you start your blog you need to work hard. Veeery hard. And after a few months or even years if you are good and people are following your adventures than you can earn money from advertising through affiliate programs, Google Adsense, social media and companies that are willing to fund your travels.
